Chelsea Grin Takes Over Irving Plaza
Four deathcore bands at Irving Plaza is a recipe for a good time - and that’s what happened at Irving Plaza on April 12th. Disembodied Tyrant, Signs of the Swarm, Shadow of Intent, and Chelsea Grin had the venue packed from front to back, with people standing in the hallway during the packed sets to soak in some of the crowd’s energy. Each band on this bill was well-received and well-known, a lineup that will truly satisfy any deathcore fan.
Disembodied Tyrant kick-started the night with a head-banging set, making sure the crowd knew what they were in for throughout the night. Chaotic lighting and heavy vocals made a big impression on anyone watching, and Disembodied Tyrant gave the other bands big shoes to fill.
The crowd gave Signs of the Swarm a fervor that I rarely see for openers. Some bands struggle to drum up the proper energy from the crowd, but when Signs of the Swarm called for crowd surfers or a circle pit, the entire audience seemed to comply. The clear enthusiasm from the band and the audience is an incredible testament to their music.
Shadow of Intent is truly hardcore. Their vocalist, Ben Duerr, blew my expectations out of the water with his live performance, and the rest of the band kept up on their respective instruments. Putting on a beyond-impressive set, Shadow of Intent is incredible to watch and perfectly prepared the crowd for what was to come.
Chelsea Grin lived up to their headliner status with the consistent participation and energy from the crowd, who kept up a nonstop pit through the hour-long set. Not only is the band talented, but they are also incredibly fun to watch. A highlight of their set was vocalist Tom Barber’s shoutout to the Lord of the Rings franchise before playing their LOTR-inspired song “Orc March”. “Orc March,” and the rest of the songs on their setlist, are peak deathcore and so fun to watch.
If you enjoy deathcore music, the best way you could spend your evening is with this tour. This is a must-mosh show, with a crowd that will spin kick with you and pick you up when you fall.
