Julien Baker & TORRES’ Send A Prayer My Way Tour Kicks Off in Richmond

Julien Baker and TORRES embarked on their Send A Prayer My Way Tour which kicked off in Richmond, Virginia on April 23, 2025, celebrating their joint album release of the same name. The duo performed to an almost sold out crowd at The National on Wednesday night.

Julien Baker is most known for her work with indie rock band, boygenius. However, her powerful vocals and storytelling lyricism give her enough edge to continue making a name for herself outside of the group. Growing up near Memphis, Tennessee to a baptist family, she found her love for music through the church. TORRES was also raised in a conservative Christian family a few hours outside of Atlanta in Macon, Georgia and was first introduced to music at a young age through the children’s choir at their church. TORRES released their first album in 2012 and has been touring extensively as an opening act, as well as booking multiple headline tours since her debut.

Julien and TORRES partnering up is a perfect match as they delve into their similar upbringings and challenging societal struggles surrounding being queer in a world that is actively fighting against the LGBTQ community. All of which are common themes found on their album.

Send A Prayer My Way was released on April 18, 2025, a little less than a week before the start of tour and the audience is already belting the lyrics back to the artists as they perform on stage; a testament to the power and validity of the music they have released and the tight grip it has on their fans.

Opening up the first three nights of the tour is singer songwriter, Aisha Burns. Aisha has been touring and performing since 2006 with numerous groups, including playing violin for instrumental ensemble Balmorhea. Aisha lended her violin skills during the making of Send A Prayer My Way and can be heard playing on the album, making it a full circle moment for her to be on tour with Julien and TORRES. Her performance was an exemplary balance of calm, slow songs and strong, lyrical ballads showcasing phenomenal control and strength in her vocals which can only be demonstrated by someone with years of expertise and perfected technique.

As Julien and TORRES took the stage, the whole crowd cheered for their anticipated arrival. Julien and TORRES impressed the audience with their custom suits adorned with embroidered, sequined details. Julien wore a fire truck red suit consisting of nature and floral patterns including irises and blue jays. TORRES sported a bright blue ensemble with cannabis leaf motifs up the side of the pant legs and a matching blazer with portraits of cats. Julien’s jacket only lasted the first song before she shed the article of clothing due to the bright lights and hot atmosphere full of energetic fans. A telltale sign the night was going to be full of dancing around and an outstanding performance.

On most occasions, some fans leave concerts without hearing their favorite song. Fortunately, I don’t believe this was the case on Wednesday night as TORRES and Julien played every single song on their album, including covers by artists that inspire them. It is a rare occurrence that artists play their albums in full, creating a very memorable evening for the fans that have found joy, love, and comfort within this special project.
