Cuco’s Sold Out Show in Sacramento, CA
Last Thursday night, Cuco made the second stop of his Ridin’ tour in Sacramento, CA. The 27 year old Chicano singer first broke out in 2016 with dreamy tracks “Amor de Siempre”and “Lover Is a Day,” quickly gaining a loyal fanbase drawn to his bilingual lyrics and genre-bending sound. Blending bedroom pop and Latin influences, Cuco has been making music for nearly a decade.
By the time doors opened, the line was already wrapped around the venue with fans eagerly waiting to go inside. When the lights finally dimmed, deafening screams filled the room as Cuco and his band took the stage. He opened with his most recent album’s title track “Ridin’”, before flowing into “Phases” and a heartfelt cover of Bobby Capó’s “Piel Canela.” This set the tone for a show that moved seamlessly between English and Spanish songs.
Cuco later followed with “Bossa No Sé,” a standout from his 2019 album Para Mi. From my spot on the balcony, I could see just how engaged the crowd was, with people singing word-for-word and taking over when Cuco held the microphone out. The upbeat song created a strong contrast with some of his mellow love songs.
The night continued with “First of the Year,” “Feelings,” and “Sin Un Corazón,” before Cuco surprised fans with two more covers, “Llorar” and “La Negra Tomasa.” The venue seemed to come alive as people danced and sang the iconic Spanish songs together.
One of the most anticipated moments came when Cuco performed “Lover Is a Day.” Before starting, he shared that he made the song nearly a decade ago in his parents’ house while still in high school. “I couldn’t even envision this happening,” he said, looking out at the crowd. “I’m always gonna be grateful, I’m always gonna be happy to be coming back to Sacramento.” The song felt like a time capsule, both for Cuco and the fans who have been with him since his earliest days.
As the night began to wind down, Cuco delivered “Lava Lamp,” “Ego Death in Thailand,” and “Far Away From Home.” But the moment everyone was waiting for came with his closer, “Lo Que Siento,” arguably his most beloved song.
Though he had planned to end there, fans weren’t ready to say goodbye just yet. They chanted for one more song until Cuco gave in. He admitted that this wasn’t a pre-planned encore like the ones everyone does before deciding to treat us to an impromptu final song, “We Had to End It”. Afterward, he stayed on stage to sign albums and posters for fans, giving the audience an unforgettable memory.
