SoCal surf-rock band Sun Room releases their latest EP, Can’t Explain
One could say that Sun Room has made their mark in the music industry. In just 3 years, the trio has gone from performing at house shows in San Diego, to touring with artists such as Louis Tomlinson and Inhaler, and even headlining their own tour across the country. Sun Room has made themselves known in the public eye, and will continue to do so as they tour with indie-pop artist Dayglow this Fall.
On August 9, Sun Room released their latest EP, Can’t Explain, and it is a true representation of how much the group has developed as musicians. Influenced by the artists they have spent time with in the last 3 years, the band showcases new genres while keeping elements of their 60’s inspired rock n’ roll charm.
The title track, “Can’t Explain,” gives us a taste of the genres Sun Room has been experimenting with. Giving us a blues rock feel, the song features a prominent baseline and their signature background harmonies. In the song itself, Luke is singing about the feeling of someone driving you insane, but staying with them anyway. There is just something about the person that keeps him captivated.
With “Bouquet”, Sun Room delves into some grunge, shoe-gaze rock elements, which is something that we have not heard from them before. The slightly distorted vocals and instrumentals give the song a unique sound, and it stands out from the rest of the EP. The “Bouquet” describes the feeling of being in love with someone you can’t have, in this case, a musician, because you are just another person in the crowd. Admiring a musician, especially one who is older or very well known, is a universal experience, and sometimes makes one feel helpless, no matter how impractical it may seem. “Bouquet” perfectly encapsulates that feeling, and it is a song that has already become a favorite for many fans.
Sun Room picks up the pace again with “Get Me Outta New York City.” Going back to their rock and roll sound, we get a more chaotic composition for this track. Luke gives us vocals that express the feeling of discontent that he feels about the city and the girl that’s possibly keeping him there.
“Hate It When You Call” gives us a strong, upbeat guitar riff. The lyrics are exactly what you expect based on the title. It’s an anti-love song that describes what it’s like to be going in circles with an ex love interest, even when you both know that there is no point. It is a song to get you singing in the crowd and dancing in the mosh pit at your next Sun Room show. If you weren’t a Sun Room fan before, you will be after listening to this EP.
From September 12th through October 28th, Sun Room will be supporting indie-pop artist Dayglow on his North American Tour. This tour will give you a chance to hear Sun Room’s latest releases in person. Below are the dates that you can catch Sun Room live.
